Indications
Ampicillin Sodium is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, sepsis, bacteremia, and meningitis. This medication is suitable for horses and livestock such as cattle, goats, and sheep, as well as companion animals like cats and dogs. However, it should not be administered to rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, or other small mammals, as it may cause enteritis or clostridial enterotoxemia in these animals.
Dosage and Administration
Usage: IV/IM/SC
For cattle, the recommended dosage is 22 mg/kg administered subcutaneously (SC) every 12 hours for respiratory infections. Horses typically receive 10-50 mg/kg intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM) three times daily, with foals requiring 11-30 mg/kg every 6-8 hours.For swine, the usual dose is 6-8 mg/kg given IM or SC every 8 hours.In poultry, the dosage is 100 mg/kg IM every 8 hours, while ratites require 15-20 mg/kg three times daily. For dogs, the usual dosage is 10-22 mg/kg IM or SC two to three times daily, or 5 mg/kg IV three times daily. In cases of urinary tract infections, 6.6 mg/kg should be given four times daily, and for sepsis or neonatal sepsis, the dosage is 20-40 mg/kg every 6-8 hours.For cats, the recommended dose is 10-20 mg/kg IM or SC twice daily, or 5 mg/kg IV three times daily. For systemic infections, 7-11 mg/kg should be given every 8-12 hours IV/IM/SC, and for sepsis, 20-40 mg/kg every 6-8 hours IV.Always consult a veterinarian or pharmacist for specific dosage guidelines.pharmacist is recommended.
Precautions & Warning:
For cattle, the withdrawal times are 48 hours for milk and 144 hours for
slaughter. Do not treat cattle for more than 7 days.The time ofwithdrawal
depends on the country' s regulatory requirements.It must be followed to
prevent food residues and consequent public health implications.
